Why Is My Shopify Discount Not Applying at Checkout? 10 Fixes
Short answer: When a Shopify discount does not apply, the cause is almost always one of ten things: the discount is not active, the cart does not meet a condition, it is being beaten by a larger discount, combinations are off, or a usage limit has been reached. Work through the list below in order.
1. The discount is inactive or outside its dates
Section titled “1. The discount is inactive or outside its dates”Open the discount in Discounts and check the status, start date, end date and time zone. A discount scheduled for midnight in the store’s time zone may not start when you expect.
2. The cart misses a minimum requirement
Section titled “2. The cart misses a minimum requirement”Check minimum purchase amount or quantity. Remember the minimum may be calculated on eligible items only, not the whole cart.
3. The products are not eligible
Section titled “3. The products are not eligible”The discount may apply only to specific products or collections. Confirm the item is in the collection, and that the collection includes the right variants.
4. The customer is not eligible
Section titled “4. The customer is not eligible”Offers limited to specific customers or segments will not apply to guests or to customers without the right tag or order history.
5. A usage limit has been reached
Section titled “5. A usage limit has been reached”Total usage limits and one-use-per-customer limits stop the discount applying after the limit is hit.
6. A better discount is winning
Section titled “6. A better discount is winning”When discounts cannot combine, Shopify applies the one with the biggest saving, so a smaller discount silently disappears. See how to apply the lowest or highest discount automatically.
7. Combinations are not enabled
Section titled “7. Combinations are not enabled”Discounts only stack if each one is set to combine with the other’s type, and the pairing is supported. Read Can you stack discounts on Shopify?.
8. You are over the automatic discount limit
Section titled “8. You are over the automatic discount limit”Shopify supports 25 active automatic discounts. See the 25 discount limit explained.
9. The checkout came from a draft order
Section titled “9. The checkout came from a draft order”Shopify disables the discount code field on checkouts that originate from draft orders. Apply the discount to the draft order itself instead.
10. The code was typed wrongly or the field is hidden
Section titled “10. The code was typed wrongly or the field is hidden”Check for extra spaces and look-alike characters. Codes are not case-sensitive. If the field is missing, check whether the checkout is a draft order checkout or a customized checkout.
Extra checks for PowerX campaigns
Section titled “Extra checks for PowerX campaigns”If the discount is a PowerX campaign:
- The campaign is Active and within its start and end dates.
- All cart qualifiers and customer qualifiers are met. Customer tags need Advanced input.
- The item selector matches the products in the cart.
- The application strategy is not hiding it. With Maximum, only the highest-value matching campaign applies. With First, only the first match in list order applies.
- The function is installed and enabled in Shopify’s checkout settings.
PowerX keeps an activity log of every campaign change, so you can see whether something was edited recently and revert it.
