Can You Stack Discounts on Shopify for Black Friday? Rules Explained
Short answer: Yes, Shopify discounts can stack, but only when you turn on combinations for each discount, and only for certain pairings. By default they do not combine, and the customer receives the single best discount.
Getting this wrong on Black Friday is expensive: a 30% product sale plus a 20% order discount plus a welcome code can leave you selling below cost.
Which Shopify discounts can be combined?
Section titled “Which Shopify discounts can be combined?”According to Shopify’s discount combinations documentation:
| Combination | Availability |
|---|---|
| Order + free shipping | All stores |
| Product + free shipping | All stores |
| Product + product (different items) | All stores |
| Product + order | Eligible stores* |
| Order + order | Eligible stores* |
| Product + product (same item) | Shopify Plus only |
| Shipping + shipping | Not allowed |
*Your store must use Checkout Extensibility (no checkout.liquid customizations) and not use the Licensify app.
Other limits:
- Up to 5 product or order discount codes and 1 shipping code per order.
- Up to 25 active automatic discounts per store, including those created by apps.
- Combinations only work on the Online Store, Storefront API and Shopify POS.
- Third-party app discounts combine only if the app supports Shopify’s discount combinations.
In what order does Shopify calculate stacked discounts?
Section titled “In what order does Shopify calculate stacked discounts?”- Product discounts apply to individual items.
- Order discounts apply to the subtotal after product discounts.
- Shipping discounts apply last.
Multiple percentage order discounts each calculate against the original subtotal, not one after another. So two 10% order discounts take 20% off, not 19%.
What happens when discounts cannot combine?
Section titled “What happens when discounts cannot combine?”Shopify applies the discount that gives the customer the biggest saving. This is the safe default for a sale, but it can surprise customers who expected to add a code on top of an automatic offer.
How to stack safely on Black Friday
Section titled “How to stack safely on Black Friday”- Choose what may stack. A common safe pairing: automatic product or order discount + free shipping.
- Do the math on worst cases. Calculate the lowest price a product can reach if every allowed discount applies.
- Keep codes exclusive. Influencer and email codes often should not stack with sitewide sales.
- Test the combinations. Add an item, apply a code, check the checkout total.
Controlling stacking with PowerX
Section titled “Controlling stacking with PowerX”PowerX campaigns are evaluated by an application strategy set per function:
- Maximum (default) — only the highest-value matching campaign applies. Safest for sales events.
- First — the first matching campaign in your priority order applies.
- All — all matching campaigns apply (product discounts only).
Order discounts and shipping discounts use Maximum or First, so they never stack with themselves.
For a Black Friday sale with overlapping offers, Maximum means customers always get the best deal and you never pay for an accidental pile-up. See also how to apply the lowest discount automatically and how to prioritize automatic discounts.
