How to Exclude Products from Black Friday Discounts on Shopify (and Protect Margins)
Short answer: To exclude products from a Black Friday discount on Shopify, apply the discount to a collection of eligible products, or use a rule that skips items by tag, vendor, type or ID. Then limit stacking so your deepest possible discount is still above cost.
Which products should you exclude?
Section titled “Which products should you exclude?”- Low-margin items where even 10% off causes a loss
- Already discounted items or clearance stock
- Brands with price rules (minimum advertised price)
- Gift cards, subscriptions or digital products
- Limited editions and hero products you sell out anyway
Method 1: Build an eligible collection (native)
Section titled “Method 1: Build an eligible collection (native)”Create an automatic collection with the condition “product tag is not no-bf” (or by vendor/type), then apply the Shopify discount to that collection. The tag lets your team exclude items without editing the discount.
Weakness: it depends on tag hygiene, and every extra exclusion rule means more collections.
Method 2: Use exclusion rules in PowerX
Section titled “Method 2: Use exclusion rules in PowerX”Item selectors support negative match conditions:
| Match condition | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Is not one of | Item does not match any listed value |
| Not contains one of | Value does not contain any listed string |
For example, an order or product campaign can target everything where Product Tags is not one of no-bf, clearance (tags require Advanced input).
Other tools:
- Cart Has Not Items — only apply the discount if no excluded product is in the cart
- Cart Has Only Items — apply a clearance-specific offer only to clearance-only carts
- Qualified item subtotal — measure thresholds on eligible items only, so excluded products do not count toward tiers
See the detailed walkthrough: exclude products from an order discount.
Set margin guardrails
Section titled “Set margin guardrails”- Calculate a floor. For each category, the maximum total discount = (price - cost - fees) / price.
- Cap stacking. Use the Maximum strategy in PowerX so only one campaign applies. Read Can you stack discounts?.
- Use thresholds. Give the deepest discounts only to larger carts. See tiers.
- Prefer value-adds (gift, early access, free shipping) over price cuts for hero products.
- Test the worst case. Build a cart of your lowest-margin items with every allowed discount applied and check the totals.
