How to Run a VIP Early Access Black Friday Sale on Shopify
Short answer: Tag your best customers, create a discount that only applies to that tag, and schedule it to start 24-48 hours before your public Black Friday sale. Tell the VIP list, and make sure they log in before checkout so the discount can recognize them.
Why run an early access sale?
Section titled “Why run an early access sale?”- It rewards loyalty with something non-VIPs cannot get.
- It spreads demand away from the Black Friday spike.
- It gives you a test run on real orders before the biggest day.
- It builds a reason to join your email list.
Offering VIPs a lower percentage plus a bonus (gift, bundle or free shipping) preserves value better than a deeper discount.
Step 1: Define and tag your VIPs
Section titled “Step 1: Define and tag your VIPs”Decide who qualifies: top spenders, repeat buyers, subscribers or loyalty members. Add a customer tag such as VIP through the Customers page, bulk edit, or your email/loyalty app integration.
Step 2: Create the VIP discount in PowerX
Section titled “Step 2: Create the VIP discount in PowerX”Customer tags need a function created with Advanced input (the choice is made at creation and cannot be changed later; see Standard vs Advanced Input).
- Create a campaign, for example a Conditional Discount under Order Discount or Product Discount.
- Add a customer qualifier: Customer Tags matches
VIP. - Set the discount (for example 15% off, or free shipping).
- Set the start date 24-48 hours before the public sale and the end date at the start of Black Friday or the end of the event.
- Activate and test with a VIP-tagged test customer.

Step 3: Add the public sale on top
Section titled “Step 3: Add the public sale on top”Create the public Black Friday campaign with its own start date. Where the two overlap, the application strategy decides the outcome:
- Maximum (default): the VIP gets whichever is better.
- All (product discounts): both apply and stack, which may be more generous than you intend.
Step 4: Announce it
Section titled “Step 4: Announce it”Send the early-access email and SMS with a clear start time (include the time zone), the log-in reminder and the offer. Do not publish the VIP offer on your public site.
Alternatives without tags
Section titled “Alternatives without tags”| Method | When to use |
|---|---|
| Customer email condition | Small named lists |
| Order count or total spent condition | Automatically reward repeat buyers or big spenders |
| Discount code | Works for non-logged-in segments, but codes can be shared |
